Guess one should never discount the potential of actresses who start out appearing in Grade Z flicks. You would never have supposed from her starring role in the abysmal Another Karate Kid in 1994 that Hilary Swank would go on to become an Oscar winner. She has, in fact, proven herself one of Hollywood’s best actresses.
Amelia, the film based on famous American female aviator Amelia Earhart, seems like the perfect fit for Swank. She closely resembles the real Earhart physically and brings to life her courage and independent spirit. Swank wisely avoids playing Earhart as a “perfect” heroine and shows her as very human and relatable. She simply wants to follow her dream of flying, while also trying to please spouse and publicist George Putnam and dealing with the complications of romantic relationships, such as with Gene Vidal, played by Ewan McGregor. Amelia Earhart was, whether she actually aspired to be or not, one of the first important icons of the early 20th century American women’s movement. Not only was she legendary because of her accomplishments as an aviatrix, but because of the lingering mystery of her disappearance. As you watch this movie and grow in admiration for the character, it’s hard to watch, since you know there’s going to be a tragic end.
The acting in this film was wonderful and the cinematography was spectacular. Was it a totally perfect movie? Not from my perspective and, definitely, not according to some critics, who have blasted it. However, no biographical filmThe Lou Gehrig Story. What matters is portraying the essence of who that individual was and making you root for him or her, even when you know everything is going to end badly. That is what Hilary Swank managed to do in her performance.
is always 100% accurate about every tiny detail of a person’s life, not even classics like
If I had a teen daughter, I would definitely take her to see Amelia, to let her see that there are better role models for young women to look up to than supermodels and members of the Kard”ass”hian family.
Amelia is not a great movie, but it is a very good one.
