DAMN, Rachel Nichols is fine! Anyway, so, there’s this 4-month window rule(not really a rule) after a flick’s theatrical release in which Studios can’t, or shouldn’t(out of respect for theater owners), release a movie to DVD. Well, you know what they say: “rules, or in this case, not really rules, are meant to be broken, and Paramount was going for a 2-fer-1. Variety reported yesterday:
Pic(G.I. Joe) will be released on DVD Nov. 3, or 12½ weeks after it unspooled in theaters on Aug. 7. Exhibs generally insist on a four-month window between theatrical and DVD release date. Par’s decision is sure to be a hot topic today as exhibitors and distributors gather in Orlando, Fla., for annual ShowEast confab.
Just so you know, “Pars” is Paramount.
The “G.I. Joe” move is the latest by studios to tweak conventional DVD windows. Warners and other distribs have tightened the period between DVD release and VOD availability on several major titles, while studios are reluctant to let Redbox start renting discount DVD titles on the same day as more lucrative sellthrough pics.
By the way, Paramount was going to release Jeremy Piven’s pile of dung, The Goods, early, as well, but decided against it. Aww, that was nice of them. I’m thinking, so what, as long as it doesn’t become the norm. Exceptions are a good thing!
