Shrek the Musical opened on Broadway last December to mixed reviews and came away with only 1 Tony Award, out of it’s 8 nominations, for costume design, but DreamWorks Theatricals still had high hopes for it’s first major project. Well, as the saying goes….”you win some, you lose some”. DreamWorks lost some on this one. According to Variety:
During its run, “Shrek” proved that it could attract some tourist auds, consistently posting gains in weeks when Gotham saw a rise in visitors. But Broadway box office never held steady at the kind of high numbers many suspected would be required to sustain the elaborate production.
Yeeeeah, never held steady to the tune of playing to audiences at 60% capacity, and, eventually, slipping to 49% capacity. Woooooo…..that hurts! Shrek will be closing it’s curtains on Jan. 3rd of next year, a rather early exit for such an “elaborate” production.
