Proving once again that new ideas are rare in Hollywood, yet another remake has come out. This time it is a remake of the 1987 thriller The Stepfather. That version starred Lost’s Terry O’Quinn in the title role. The updated version has Nip/Tuck’s Brandon Walsh playing the part. There is nothing extraordinary about the plot. It revolves around David Harris (Walsh), a handsome, seemingly perfect guy looking to make a commitment to a special lady. He gets engaged to divorced mom Susan(the ever gorgeous Sela Ward), who thinks he is her dream man, but her son Michael (Penn Badgley) is not buying the wholesome fella act, and he sets out to prove that David may not be all he claims to be.Of course, everything is predictable and we know before we even walk into the movie theater that this guy is some murderous psycho who’s going to add some new inhabitants to the local cemetery before the end of the flick. There is no real resolution at the end, meaning that the door is left open for a sequel.Basically, there’s not much plot-wise that deviates from the original film, except for the use of modern technology and, maybe, a better looking leading man(see the original “Stepfather”).Many critics have been unkind to The Stepfather. While I don’t see it as an especially “great” film, it is rather enjoyable. This is the kind of flick where people can sit down, eat some popcorn and yell at the screen. Sometimes we just want to watch something that gets our juices flowing and engages us, which is exactly what The Stepfather does.
Dylan Walsh was a wise choice to play the deceptively harmless serial killer. Others in the cast include Jon Tenney, Sherry Springfield, Amber Heard(my boo!) and Paige Turco.
High art it’s not, but if you simply want some good thrills, The Stepfather is worth seeing.
Leave the kiddies at the crib! This one’s kinda’ violent.

Regretful Morning

Not a bad result for another hum-drum remake from Tinseltown. On a diff note, I am assuming you have seen the Amber Heard scenes from her movie The Informers? If not, check it now.
